CSC LED Donates $5,000 to Food Banks — 6 Meaningful Ways You Can Give Back Too

The holiday season is a time to reflect, give back, and make a positive impact in our communities. This year, we’re proud to have donated $5,000 to Food Banks Canada and to have run a local food drive, collecting canned goods and pantry staples for our local food bank in Cambridge. Seeing these donations reach families in need reminds us how even small acts can have a big impact.

There are countless ways to contribute this season and throughout the year, but our team rounded up our favourites!

Donate to the Food Bank

Financial gifts to food banks allow for the purchase of fresh and nutritious food for families in need. Non-perishable items like canned vegetables, pasta, rice, and cooking essentials are always appreciated. Food donations ensure no one in your community goes hungry. If you are interested in donating, visit Food Banks Canada for more information.

Volunteer Your Time

Giving your time is one of the most meaningful ways to make an impact, especially during the holidays! Here are some impactful ways to volunteer:

  • Food Banks: Sort, pack, and distribute food donations to families in need.

  • Shelters & Community Centres: Support meal programs, holiday events, or help organize incoming donations.

  • Senior Homes: Spend time with residents, assist with activities, or offer companionship to those who may feel isolated.

  • Community Clean-Ups: Join neighbourhood beautification efforts or local improvement projects.

  • Youth Programs: Volunteer as a mentor, tutor, or activity helper for after-school or community youth initiatives.

Even a few hours of your time can create a ripple of positivity and make a meaningful difference in someone’s day!

Help Children in Need Through Toy Drives, Books & More

Holiday toy drives and book donations are powerful ways to bring joy to children who may otherwise go without this year. Donating new toys, children’s books, or cozy baby blankets to hospitals, shelters, or underserved families can help spark imagination, comfort, and hope when it’s needed most.

  • Donate to Children’s Hospitals & Pediatric Wards — Many hospitals accept gifts, toys, books, and comfort items for kids during their stay. For example, SickKids Foundation in Toronto accepts new, unopened toys and entertainment items to brighten the holidays for young patients.

  • Support Holiday Toy Drives — Organizations like Children’s Health Foundation run annual drives collecting toys, games, and books for children in hospitals or underserved communities.

  • Help Families in Need Locally — Community-based drives such as The Toy Drive Association (Greater Toronto Area) deliver gifts directly to children in low-income households, ensuring more families can celebrate.

By donating thoughtfully and safely — with new, unwrapped items — you help bring comfort, laughter, and normalcy to children facing difficult circumstances.

Donate Blood

Blood donations save lives every day. Hospitals across Canada rely on a steady stream of donors to keep up with demand—blood is needed for emergencies, surgeries, cancer treatments, and chronic illness care. According to Canadian Blood Services (CBS), the system regularly collects around 17,000 units of blood per week to meet national needs.

Just one donation (about 450 mL) can support multiple patients! During the holidays, when donation rates often drop, every donation counts even more.

Donate Winter Gear for Those in Need

Donating winter coats, boots, hats, gloves, scarves, socks, and blankets makes a life-changing difference. As temperatures drop, adequate winter gear is often the difference between safety and danger for people without stable housing or sufficient resources. These donations help protect against frostbite, hypothermia, and the harsh effects of winter. They also offer a sense of dignity and care during a season that can be especially challenging.

The following is a list of resources where you can make a donation.

  • The Salvation Army: a nationwide network with thrift-store donation centres that accept gently used coats, boots, blankets, and winter accessories.

  • Project Warmth Society (Calgary): accepts jackets, coats, boots, gloves, blankets, and sleeping bags year-round. Donations can be dropped off at any Calgary fire station.

  • Calgary Drop-In Centre / Free Goods Program (Calgary): accepts winter clothing, footwear, blankets, and other essential items to support low- and no-income individuals.

  • Blankets for T.O. (Toronto): accepts blankets, warm clothing, hats, gloves, hygiene items, and more; coordinates donation drop-offs or pick-up arrangements.

  • Moving Hope (Toronto): grassroots group that collects warm clothing, hats, gloves, and distributes them directly to vulnerable populations in downtown Toronto.

Hygiene Care Packages for Women’s Shelters

Creating and donating hygiene care packages is a meaningful way to support women in homeless shelters, helping them maintain health, dignity, and confidence. Thoughtfully assembled kits can include essentials such as soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, hand sanitizer, lotion, and warm socks. These small but impactful items provide comfort during challenging times and remind recipients that their community cares. When donating, be sure all products are new and unopened, as most shelters require this for safety and hygiene purposes.

  • The Shoebox Project for Women: A national initiative based in Toronto that distributes gift-filled shoeboxes containing hygiene items, toiletries, and small comforts to women experiencing homelessness. Great for delivering personal care packages directly.

  • The Care Shelf: Toronto-based charity focused on assembling and delivering hygiene and comfort packages to women in shelters. Their model makes it easy for donors to contribute full kits rather than individual items.

  • Blankets for T.O. (Toronto): Accepts donations of hygiene products, blankets, and other essentials; coordinates with shelters and homeless-outreach organizations across the Greater Toronto Area.

Why Giving Matters

During the holidays, many people face hardships that are less visible in everyday life. Donations of food, money, clothing, toys, or time provide immediate relief while also fostering hope, community connection, and kindness. Every act of generosity helps build a stronger, more caring society.

If you are interested in giving back this holiday season and not sure where to start, Canada Helps is a great source that has thousands of registered Canadian charities (food banks, children’s hospitals, shelters, etc.).
